By
tradition, the origin of Halloween marked the end of the harvest season and the
beginning of winter, the time for stock taking and preparing for the cold
winter ahead, cattle were brought back from the summer pastures, livestock were
slaughtered, bonfires were lit and there were rituals involving souls of the
dead and other beings such as fairies coming into the world.
In
modern days, costumes are worn as a means of disguising oneself from these
harmful spirits and fairies. Making jack-o'-lanterns is another way to represent
the spirits and fairies as well as to protect one's home from them. Halloween
activities include trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving pumpkins into
jack-o’-lanterns, lighting bonfires, playing pranks, reciting scary stories and
watching horror films.
