Welcome to the Green World of Starwood!

Recently we held our Regional Vice President (RVP) Award night here at The Westin Mumbai Garden City. The theme for the evening was ‘GO GREEN’. The word ‘Green’ conjures up thoughts of the 3 R’s, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Green was not just the color of the day but it had a strong message which was communicated through various mediums. The theme was designed keeping in mind the objective of creating awareness about global warming and also to waste less energy. The stage was prepared by using old newspaper and sun board, the backdrop was made from used plastic bottles and the frame for the TV screen was prepared with egg containers.

The evening was dedicated to the environment. The red carpet, rather green carpet was lined with an environment poster and trees along the pathway. The stage came alive by the band Taal Inc. who performed with nothing but paint buckets, broomsticks, aluminum sheets, containers and plastic bottles as their instruments. The band’s performance was rhythmic which filled our banquet hall with an air of melody. Later in the evening, the Housekeeping team of The Westin Mumbai Garden City performed a drama and dance act of our beloved farmers. Associates were dressed as scarecrows and the picture below reveals all.

Post the performances, it was award time. Teams representing all Starwood brands were given awards for outstanding performances across all divisions. The eventful award ceremony ended with a mouth-watering buffet showcasing world cuisine. The cuisine served in the event was organically produced and served. From scrumptious starters to global delicacies to delectable desserts, the choices were endless. Those who love music and dance got an opportunity to shake a leg. A round of applause and standing ovation was given to our Food and Beverage, Culinary and Banquet teams for their effort and support in making the RVP Award night the most memorable event in the history of Starwood.

Starwood is a supporter of the go green initiative. As a global organization in the hospitality industry, Starwood has always encouraged their associates and guest to help in conserving energy and lot of focus is given on reduce, reuse and recycle. We at The Westin Mumbai Garden City, give guests a chance to be part of our go green initiative. We have a program by the name of ‘Make a Green Choice’ where guests have an option to decline housekeeping services and earn Starpoints. The response for this program has been extremely positive. Many people have opted for make a green choice. This shows that communities cares for Mother Earth and are happy to be part of Go Green. It’s our chance to be part of such programs, encourage others to do the same and make a green choice.

Celebrate World Environment Day

World Environment Day (WED), an initiative run by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is celebrated every year on 5 June. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to raise global awareness on the world environment and also to encourage people to take steps to conserve our environment. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment took place in Stockholm from 5 to 16 June 1972.

The first World Environment Day was on 5 June 1973. World Environment Day is celebrated every year by a different city with a different theme to spread awareness about the deteriorating environment and to encourage people to take positive actions to conserve it. Different countries carry out activities like street rallies and parades, concerts, tree planting and clean-up campaigns. In many countries, World Environment Day is used to enhance political attention and action towards improving the environment.

The event has helped us understand the environmental issues at hand and enabled everyone to realize their responsibilities towards sustainable development and a better world. It is not just a day activity but an opportunity to come together and take measures for our mother earth. Every small step taken by an individual counts, even if it is walking to work, cleaning up the neighbourhood, or saying no to plastic. It is time to make green choices, take initiatives and be an ambassador of Go Green!

Every action is a step closer to a healthy environment and green economy.  Tell us about your green initiatives and help us change the world.

Lighting up our lives in that hour of darkness

The constant change in the conditions of our planet have had a negative impact on the environment. As a result in the wastage of electricity, food and water, the impact of deforestation, increased levels of pollution and the methods of waste disposal, have all resulted in a surge in climatic change with an adverse effect on our planet. Increasing levels of awareness of these detrimental changes have lead to the birth of Earth Hour in 2004. Year upon year, there has been surge in the level of support across the globe to want to make a difference in saving mother earth.

Every little bit makes a difference so here are some small tips for you all to follow at home:
  • Switch of the lights and why not take the opportunity to splurge on a romantic candle lit dinner with your loved one
  • Avoid the use of electronic equipment – television, kettle, dishwasher, hairdryer, toaster, washing machine, stereo, use the time to take a walk
  • Minimize the wastage of water by switching off the tap when not needed whilst you brush your teeth, whilst washing dishes, whilst taking a shower
  • Recycle waste such as glass, plastic, cans, paper and cardboard
Here at The Westin Mumbai Garden City, we will join millions of individuals, organizations, businesses and governments across the globe to celebrate our commitment to the ongoing change for the betterment of the one thing that unites us all – our planet. We will initiate various energy-saving measures including dimming or turning off non-essential interior and exterior lighting; candlelight dinners in restaurants and bars; carpooling and using of public transport by associates thereby saving fuel and reducing carbon emissions, tree plantation activity, candle light dinner in associate dining area just to name a few.
